Removal of amalgam

Today, you certainly wouldn’t use an old computer from the last century, right? Even though it was once considered cutting-edge technology, its outdated concept simply doesn’t meet today’s standards. The same applies to some older dental materials and methods — including amalgam, which modern dentistry has already replaced with safer and more aesthetic solutions.

The same goes for certain methods and materials that were once used in dentistry. They were once considered safe and functional solutions, but today science has replaced them with safer and more effective alternatives.
One of those outdated materials is amalgam fillings. It has already been proven – this filling has no place in your mouth, just as outdated technologies have no place in modern dentistry.
How does it harm us?

Amalgam

Only two or three decades ago, the most popular material for caries treatment in dentistry was amalgam obturation. Our more mature patients remember those gray metal fillings. There is no way to forget them – they are noticeable from afar with every smile, contrast strongly with the whiteness of the teeth and often leave an unpleasant metallic taste in the mouth. And their shortcomings do not end there.
Many people still keep one of these fillings in their mouth. If you are one of them, come to Medical Dent. We are one of the few dental clinics that offer amalgam removal and replacement with high quality, aesthetic material in the natural shade of your smile.
Reasons for removal

Why is it necessary to remove the amalgam filling?

Because amalgam is a mixture of several types of metals, including mercury. It is the main reason today that these obturations are considered unsafe for health. Everyone knows that mercury is poisonous. And even though the amounts of it in the filling are small, they can still be released and transferred into the bloodstream and spread throughout the body. Fatal consequences are unlikely to occur, but real health problems are not ruled out. It is therefore best to spare your body such toxic compounds.
The European Union is working hard to phase out the use of dental amalgam for all members of the population. It is forbidden for children under 15. as well as in pregnant and lactating women.

How does the procedure work?

Amalgam obturation removal is an easy and painless procedure that aims to replace unsightly metal obturation with a modern and aesthetically pleasing alternative. It proceeds in the following steps:

1. Isolation

The treated tooth is completely isolated using a latex cloth. This is done to prevent the penetration of dust or particles of amalgam into the mouth – on the one hand. And of bacteria through the saliva in the tooth during treatment – on the other.

2. Patient protection

The patient is fitted with a mask over the mouth and nose, as well as special protective goggles – preventive measures against possible metal particles.

3. Safe removal

The amalgam is removed using precision instruments that prevent damage to the tooth structure. If the tooth underneath is healthy, the patient feels no pain. With deeper caries and damage that has occurred over the years under the metal filling, there may be soreness. An anaesthetic is then applied to remove the filling and treatment proceeds.

4. Filling new seals

After successful removal of the amalgam, the site is filled with modern and completely safe composites.
