The treated tooth is completely isolated using a latex cloth. This is done to prevent the penetration of dust or particles of amalgam into the mouth – on the one hand. And of bacteria through the saliva in the tooth during treatment – on the other.
The patient is fitted with a mask over the mouth and nose, as well as special protective goggles – preventive measures against possible metal particles.
The amalgam is removed using precision instruments that prevent damage to the tooth structure. If the tooth underneath is healthy, the patient feels no pain. With deeper caries and damage that has occurred over the years under the metal filling, there may be soreness. An anaesthetic is then applied to remove the filling and treatment proceeds.
After successful removal of the amalgam, the site is filled with modern and completely safe composites.
